The Korean War

Our first blog entry was supposed to be about a conflict. I choose the Korean War, because I thought it seemed interesting.

The Korean War was a conlict between Communists and non-Communists. It started the 25th of June 1950 because North-Korea attacked South-Korea. North-Korea attacked them because their leader wanted to make it one country, and not two. It was Josef Stalin who convinced North-Koreas leader, Kim Il Sung, to do this. Stalin's wish was that all of Korea became communists. It stopped the 27th of July 1953 because of an ceasefire.

Korea was divided into North-Korea and South-Korea, so the parties in the war was North-Korea, wich was assisted by Sovjet and China, and South-Korea, wich was supported by the U.S. It was an international conflict, where many countries were involved.

The war was fought with weapons and military forces. North-Korea had an army of 135 000 men which the russians had built up, while South-Korea only had 98 000 men in theirs. South-Korea's army, however, was mostly looked at as a police force. America helped South-Korea with air- and marine forces.

There was no solution, and Korea is still divided into two. The two countries announced ceasefire the 4th of October 2007, and their goal is to turn this into peace treaty. I don't think that Korea will be one country, because they have fought for so long and don't seem to come to an agreement. A solution to the conflict seems really distant, but maybe they will agree one day. I think the residents in both North- and South-Korea feel very unsafe now, because they don't know how this is going to turn out.
